Cyclone Dana Live Update 2024


The Meteorological Department has indicated the possibility of cyclone Dana till October 23 due to the formation of low pressure over the Bay of Bengal. The next 48 hours are heavy for the coastal areas of Orissa and West Bengal due to this cyclonic storm. The weather department and local authorities have advised fishermen not to venture out into the sea till Monday. Also appealed to move away from the sea shore.

The Meteorological Department has expressed the fear of landslides in Puri, Odisha due to the storm. Low pressure has formed over East-Central Bay of Bengal and North Andaman Sea indicating possibility of cyclonic storm over North Andaman Sea and Bay of Bengal.

Thunderstorms will become active on Tuesday

According to the IMD, a low-pressure area formed in the Bay of Bengal is moving west-northwestward. Its speed will increase from Tuesday morning. Cyclonic storm will develop over east-central Bay of Bengal by Wednesday, October 23. The cyclonic storm moving towards northwesterly direction may reach north-west Bay of Bengal near Odisha and West Bengal coast by 24 October.

Heavy rain forecast

The Meteorological Department has forecast 20 cm of rain over some areas in the coastal region by October 24-25. The speed of rain may increase to 20 to 30 cm. The storm may bring more than 30 cm of rain at some places. Heavy rain alert has been issued in Cuttack, Nayagarh, Kandhamal, and Gajapati due to Cyclone Dana. Heavy to very heavy rain with thundershowers is likely in these areas. A heavy rain alert has also been issued in East Medinapur, West Medinapur, South 24 Parganas, North 24 Parganas of West Bengal. Kolkata, Howrah, Hooghly and Jhargram are likely to experience heavy rains during October 23 to 24.

The storm will also hit Odisha-West Bengal coast

The weather system is expected to move west-northwestward and transform into a depression by morning on 22 October and cyclonic storm over east-central Bay of Bengal by 23 October.

Thereafter, it is likely to move northwestward and reach north-west Bay of Bengal off Odisha-West Bengal coast by October 24 morning.

Odisha and coastal areas of West Bengal are likely to receive heavy rainfall from October 23 to 25. The IMD has advised fishermen to return to the coast by October 21. IMD Director General Mritunjay Mohapatra said that the system is likely to take the form of a severe cyclonic storm.

It will rain in Odisha

Heavy to very heavy rain is likely over some parts of Odisha from October 23. Some coastal places may receive 20 cm of rain on October 24-25. Light to moderate rain is also likely over West Bengal and Andhra Pradesh.
