A major decision was taken in the Union Cabinet meeting chaired by Prime
Minister Narendra Modi on Wednesday. Now every elderly person above 70 years
of age in the country will get the benefit of 'Pradhan Mantri Jan Arogya
Yojana-Ayushman Bharat'. There will be no distinction between rich and poor,
rather everyone will be brought under its ambit.
Informing about the Cabinet decisions, Union Minister Ashwini Vaishnav said
that this will be a new category under Ayushman Bharat Yojana. Under this, the
government will provide health insurance to every senior citizen above 70
years of age with free treatment facility up to 5 lakh rupees.
This is how the plan will work for the elderly
Minister Ashwini Vaishnav while detailing the benefits of this scheme said
that it will be universal health coverage for senior citizens above 70 years
of age. Currently around 12.3 crore families are benefiting from Ayushman
Bharat Yojana. About 4.5 crore families or 6 crore senior citizens will
benefit from the facility launched for the elderly.
5 lakh rupees will be received every year
Families who are already part of the Ayushman Bharat Yojana, if one person in
their family is above 70 years of age, will get an additional top-up of up to
Rs 5 lakh per year. This share will be health cover.

Such families which are currently not covered under Ayushman Bharat Yojana.
Senior citizens above 70 years of age will be included in it and will get a
share cover of Rs 5 lakh per year.
If there is a couple above 70 years of age in this category of Ayushman India,
the insurance cover of Rs 5 lakh for both will be the same. Everyone, be it
middle class or upper class, will benefit from this.
Government employees will also get the option
Not only such elders who are covered under any Central Government or State
Government Health Scheme (CGHS/SGHS) or Army Health Scheme. All of them will
have the option to continue with their old scheme or opt for this cover of
Ayushman Bharat. Senior citizens with Employees' State Insurance Scheme (ESCI)
or private health insurance will also have the opportunity to join Ayushman
India.

People will get benefit of this scheme free of charge. However, for this the
government will request all senior citizens to take insurance and the
application process will start soon. The government has made an initial
provision of Rs 3,437 crore for this category.

Many other important decisions were also taken in the cabinet meeting. The
government has set a target of 31,350 MW power generation through
hydroelectricity. The government will spend Rs 12,461 crore on it. Not only
this, the government will now launch a new scheme 'PM E-Drive Yojana' to
promote the use of electric vehicles in the country. A provision of Rs 10,900
crore has been made for this.

The 'PM E-Drive Scheme' (PM Electric Drive Revolution in Innovative Vehicle
Enhancement) will replace the nearly 9-year-old FAME subsidy scheme in the
country. The new scheme will benefit the purchase of 24.79 lakh electric
two-wheelers, 3.16 lakh e-three-wheelers and 14,028 e-buses. Under the new
scheme, 88,500 charging stations will also get help from the government.
