The Shiv Purana is one of the eighteen major Puranas, a genre of Sanskrit
texts in Hinduism, and part of the Saivism literature. It is primarily
centered around the Hindu deities Shiva and Goddess Parvati, but references
and honors all deities.
The Shiv Purana claims to contain 100,000 verses at one time enunciated in
twelve Samhitas (books). Lord Shiva himself is said to have said it according
to the great sage Veda Vyasa, who summarized it and taught it to his disciple
Romaharshan. The surviving manuscripts exist in many different texts and
materials, with one major edition with seven books (discovered in South
India), another with six books, while a third edition is in the medieval
Bengal region of the Indian subcontinent. In which no books, but two large
books. Divisions known as Purva-Khand (Earlier Division) and Uttar-Khand
(Later Division).

different titles. The Shiva Purana, like other Puranas of Hindu literature,
was edited by Veda Vyasa in each age so as not to "diminish its usefulness as
a work of authority". The oldest surviving manuscript of the texts is
estimated to be by Klaus Klostermeyer around the 10th to 11th century. Some
chapters of currently surviving Shiva Purana manuscripts were written after
the 14th century.
Shiv Purana contains chapters dealing with cosmology, mythology, relationship
between gods, ethics, yoga, tirtha (pilgrimage) places, devotion, rivers and
geography and other topics. Texts on the various forms and theologies behind
Shaivism from the first millennium BC are an important source of historical
information. Important among the oldest surviving chapters of the Shiva Purana
is Advaita Vedanta philosophy, mixed with theistic elements of bhakti.
