Krishna Janmashtami, also known simply as Janmashtami or Gokulashtami, is an annual Hindu festival that celebrates the birth of Krishna, the eighth incarnation of Lord Vishnu. Krishna Janmashtami is followed by the festival Nandotsava, which celebrates the occasion when Nanda Baba distributed gifts to the community in honor of the birth.

Krishna is the son of Devaki and Vasudeva and his birthday is celebrated as Janmashtami by Hindus, especially in the Gaudiya Vaishnava tradition, as the Supreme Personality of Godhead. Janmashtami is celebrated according to Hindu tradition when it is believed that Krishna was born in Mathura on the eighth day of Bhadrapada month.

Krishna was born in the realm of chaos. It was a time when persecution was widespread, freedom was denied, evil was everywhere, and when his life was threatened by his maternal uncle, King Kamsa.

Krishna ji is an incarnation of Lord Vishnu, who is in charge of the Satguna division of the three qualities of the three worlds, Satguna, Rajaguna and Tamoguna. Being an incarnation of God, the Siddhis were present in Krishnaji from birth. At the time of the marriage of his parents Vasudeva and Devakiji, when Mama Kansa was on his way to meet his sister Devaki's in-laws, there was an oracle which said that Devaki's eighth son would kill Kansa. That is, it was already certain to happen, so Kansa could not kill Krishna despite keeping Vasudeva and Devaki in prison.

Soon after his birth in a prison in Mathura, his father Vasudeva Anakdundubhi takes Krishna across the Yamuna, so that the parents are named Nanda and Yashoda in Gokul. This story is celebrated on Janmashtami by people fasting, singing devotional songs of Krishna love and keeping vigils at night. After Krishna's midnight birth, idols of the infant Krishna are washed and clothed, then placed in the cradle. After this the devotees break the fast by sharing food and sweets. Women make small footprints outside their kitchen doors and walk towards their homes, symbolizing Krishna's arrival in their homes.
