Puri temple of Odisha remains in the headlines for its mysteries and miracles. The Jagannath Rath Yatra of Puri temple is world famous. Which starts every year in the month of Ashadh. Jagannath Rath Yatra starts on the second day of Shukla Paksha of Ashadh month. On this day, Lord Jagannath along with his brother Balabhadra and sister Subhadra rides around the city on three different chariots and visits his aunt's house Gundicha Temple.
The Jagannath temple located in Puri, Odisha, India is traditionally closed for 15 days every year during Anavasar or Anasar period. After these 15 days, the Rath Festival or Rath Yatra is taken out. According to religious belief, people participating in the Jagannath Rath Yatra attain salvation. The word Jagannath means 'Lord of the Universe'. Jagannathji is considered to be an incarnation of Lord Vishnu. Rath Yatra is organized every year in the city of Puri, Odisha. On this festival day, mainly three deities are worshiped, including Lord Jagannath, his elder brother Balabhadra and his younger sister Subhadra.
When will the Jagannath Yatra start?
According to the Hindu calendar, the Dwitiya Tithi of Shukla Paksha of Ashadh month is starting on 7th July 2024 at 04:26 am. Dwitiya Tithi will end on 8th July 2024 at 04:59 am, so according to Udaya Tithi, Jagannath Rath Yatra is going to start from 7th July in 2024.
Why is Rath Yatra organized every year?
On the full moon day of Jyeshtha month, Lord Jagannath, sister Subhadra and elder brother Balabhadra are brought out of the sanctum sanctorum and given a bath. It is believed that after this Lord Jagannath fell ill and got fever. For this reason, Lord Jagannath rests in the bedroom for 15 days. During this, the entire temple remains closed for 15 days. After this, on the second day of Shukla Paksha of Ashad month, he comes out of his resting place after recovering and in this happiness a grand Rath Yatra is taken out.
How is Rath Yatra organized?
For the grand Rath Yatra, three separate chariots are made for Lord Jagannath, Balabhadra and Devi Subhadra. In the journey, Balabhadra's chariot goes in the front, sister Subhadra's in the middle and Lord Jagannath's chariot goes at the back. The Lord sits on a huge chariot and reaches his aunt's house Gundicha Temple, where he rests for a few days. After this he returns to his home again.
According to religious beliefs, Lord Krishna resides on earth in the form of Lord Jagannath in Puri. There is a tradition of taking out his Rath Yatra once a year, in which the lucky people who participate get the virtue of 100 yagyas. People attain salvation by the grace of Lord Jagannath. It is believed that bathing in Puri in the month of Ashadh gives virtue equal to the visit to all the pilgrimages.
