Sriram Charita Manas is an epic poem written by the 15th century poet Goswami Tulsidas. As Tulsidas himself wrote in Balkand of Sri Ramcharit Manas that he started the composition of Sri Ramcharit Manas in Ayodhya on the day of Rama Navami of Vikrama Samvat 1631 (AD 1574). According to Shri Hanuman Prasad Poddar of Gitapress Gorakhpur, it took Tulsidas 2 years 7 months 26 days to write Ramcharitmanas.
He completed this composition in Samvat 1633 (AD 1576) on the day of the marriage of Margshirsha Shuklapaksha. The language of this epic is Awadhi, a branch of Hindi. Ramcharitmanas is considered a great work of Hindi literature. Sriram Charitmanas is also commonly called Tulsi Ramayana or Tulsi Krita Ramayana.
Sri Ramacharita Manas portrays Sri Rama as an incarnation of Lord Vishnu, while Maharishi Valmiki Krita Ramayana portrays Sri Rama as a human being. Rama, the Lord of Tulsi, though omnipotent, is Mariya Purushottama. In Sharad Navratri, this Sundar Kanda is recited for nine days.
Tulsidas has divided Ramacharitmanas into seven chapters. The names of these seven kands are – Balkand, Ayodhyakand, Arnayakand, Kishkindhakand, Sunderkand, Lankakand and Uttarkand. According to the number of verses, Ayodhyakand and Sunderkand are the largest and smallest kand respectively. Tulsidas has made a beautiful use of Hindi ornaments (especially alliteration) in Ramacharitmanas.
