According to popular belief, many remains of the Mahabharata period are still
present on this historical Osam hill near Patnaav village. It is said that the
Pandavas stayed at Osam Mountain during their exile. Hidamba also lived on
Mount Aaj Osam during his exile, hence Bhima's gaze met him.
It is also said that during their love-making, Bhima gave Hidamba a hard
hiccup and Hidamba fell down the Osam mountain into the foothills below. The
bones of Hidamba that fell in the foothills were broken and hence the village
was named Haddiyan, which you can still find in the foothills.
Apart from this, the temple of Tapkeshwar Mahadev built by Pandavas and the
water tank near it, in which water continuously drips from the hill. Apart
from this, Bhimi thali can still be seen in Patangan. However, with time this
Bhima Thali has become horizontal. At the time of Mahabharata, Osam Dungar was
known as Mother Mataji Chhatreshwari Mataji.
Because the rocks of this mountain were straight, flat and smooth, it was also
known as Mount Makaria. Observation shaped mountain is visible and is now
known as Om + Sam = Osam Parvat. Every year a three-day fair is organized on
Osam mountain from Bhadravi month in the presence of Mother Goddess. This fair
is organized by Patnavav Gram Panchayat.
